If you want to change your style you need to start by taking a long good look at yourself in the mirror so that you can embrace the shape of your body. Everyone has their own unique set of proportions and shape and regardless of what it is there are clothing styles out there that will flatter it. However, if you do not choose wisely or attempt to get proportions you don’t have then your style is going to suffer. Therefore, it is very wise to just accept what you have to work with and then take great pains to actually work it.
First of all you need to figure out what shape body you have and this can be done without a lot of measuring. Instead, take a plum line that stretches from the hip to the shoulder. If the shoulder and hip stick out the same distance then this means a person has a defined shape with a definite waist. This is the ideal. On the other hand, if the shoulder sticks out farther than the hip then they are called in inverted triangle shape. On the other hand, a person that has wider hips than their shoulder would be called a triangular shape.
The good news is that there are great style tricks to make every single one of these shapes look proportionate and balanced. For instance, someone that has wider shoulders than their hips they have the inverted triangular shape. In order to counter this look you want to create volume in the lower half of the body to make the hips look wider. This will help to balance out the shoulders. Pants that have cutaways like pleats or full skirts can all help to add some volume to balance things out a bit.
On the other hand, if a person has a triangular shape meaning the hips stick out more than the shoulders then you need to do the opposite. Instead of trying to pad out the hips, you want to instead try to bring out the shoulders. Shoulder pads are a great way to do this but you can also choose to wear lapels or bottle necks. This each gives off the illusion of thicker shoulders. You also want to make sure that all pants are docked up and fitted because you do not want the pants to take over the outfit and throw off the proportions anymore.
Finally, you want to look at your torso and decide if you are long or short waisted. You can do this easily is by measuring the actual top and bottom of your torso. This will give you an idea of whether your torso is top heavy or bottom heavy based on the length of your legs versus the length of your upper body. A long waisted body benefits by cuts that are low rise to help balance things out by extending the upper torso. On the other hand, a short waisted person will want higher cut jeans to minimize the difference between top and bottom.
